Spurrier owns up to Tebow snub
July 24th, 2009 by chipcosby | Filed under Uncategorized.South Carolina Steve Spurrier admitted that he was the coach who didn’t vote for Florida’s Tim Tebow as the first-team All-SEC quarterback on Friday at SEC Media Days.
Spurrier said his ballot was filled out by a staff member, and that staff member voted for Jevan Snead. Spurrier said he later asked that staff member if he voted for Tebow, and the staff member said that since there were already so many Florida players on the ballot, he decided to go with Snead. But Spurrier took responsibility for the mistake and said he would even rank Tebow with former player Danny Wuerrfel as perhaps the two greatest quarterbacks in college football history.
Spurrier also said he consulted with SEC associate commisioner Charles Bloom and was able to change his vote to put Tebow on the first team.
“That’s my fault,” Spurrier said. “I apologize to Tim Tebow. I’m embarrassed about it. But that’s the way it happened. I have no reason to slight Tim. I think he’s not only the best quarterback in our league, but the best quarterback in the country and the best football player in the country.”
